What Is Hypnotherapy?

The type of hypnotherapy I practice is a form of psychotherapy under hypnosis.  Instead of giving direct suggestions to you, I help you explore your inner world of feelings and body sensations hidden below your ordinary consciousness.

Most people know what to do in order to lead a healthy, happy life.  You have the knowledge, understanding and insights. Yet, it is difficult for you to change your emotional and behavioral patterns.

There is a purpose and meaning in everything we do even if it seems to go against our goal in life.  If we find out what our body and subconscious mind are trying to do in order to protect us, we have a way to integrate our mind, body and spirit.

I facilitate a dialogue with the body and subconscious mind to find out what it needs in order to change.  Often times your inner wisdom brings out an answer you never imagined with your conscious mind.  Again and again my clients are amazed with their own inner resources. This is an empowering process.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help You?
The British Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis in medical schools and post-graduate curricula in 1955 and the American Medical Association followed suit in 1958.  Since then, hypnosis has been used by doctors, psychologists, psychotherapists and hypnotherapists for various purposes.  Hypnosis can be used to supplement medical treatments, to treat emotional issues and to enhance athletic, academic and artistic performances. Some of the issues my clients have dealt with are as follows:
  • Stress management
  • Emotional eating
  • Grief
  • Athletic and musical performance
  • Phobias (fear of flying , public speaking, height, driving, etc.)
  • Fear of failure
  • Relationship issues
  • Anger
Will I Lose Control During Hypnotherapy?

No. A hypnotherapist simply uses words and sounds to relax your body and mind so that you can switch your focus from the external world to your deep inner world.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  You do not say or do anything against your will.

What Is a Hypnotic State?

The hypnotic state is a highly focused state of mind in Alpha brain wave frequency.  The body is relaxed completely. Your senses are sharper. It is NOT a sleep state.

When you daydream, or get absorbed in a wonderful novel or music, your awareness of the surroundings fade into the peripheral.  Your mind freely travels in your world of imagination and senses.  Time seems to move faster or slower. Vigorous exercise sometimes induces a "high" state.  Many athletes find this state full of inspirations.

These are examples of naturally caused hypnotic states.

Hypnotherapy induces a hypnotic state for a specific purpose.

You are not asleep when you are hypnotized.  Therefore you can hear the hypnotherapist's voice and also can converse with her.

Can Everybody Be Hypnotized?

Anybody with imagination can be hypnotized. However, hypnosis is induced using your ability to relax and imagine.  Therefore some can be hypnotized easily and quickly while others take some practice.  If you have difficulty with hypnosis, I use other methods to reach your subconscious mind including Emotional Freedom Techniques and muscle testing. So anybody can reach his/her subconscious mind.

Yoko's quiet assurance, deft use of her helping skills, and gently firm compassion, combined with my own 'readiness for movement' created a powerfully generative session from which I am still thriving. She was able to help me go to depths that surprised me; her witnessing released some of my attachment to suffering. Through laughter, anger and tears, I reached a peace that resides in me yet.
